The Chaffey Festival is a celebration of Mildura’s history, commemorating Mildura Day and embracing the diverse narratives that shape the region. In its inaugural year, the festival promises an enriching weekend filled with historical insights and community spirit. The celebration will commence with the festival’s feature event on Friday May 31 at the Powerhouse Place.

Presenters

Stuart Kells

Stuart Kells is an award-winning author and historian whose books have been published around the world. He has twice won the prestigious Ashurst Business Literature prize, and his book The Library: A Catalogue of Wonders was shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s literary award and the NSW Premier’s general history prize. He delivered the 2018 Jean Whyte Lecture and the 2022 Murray Talk. He is Adjunct Professor at La Trobe University’s College of Arts, Social Sciences and Commerce. He is currently writing a history of the Mildura region, to be published by Melbourne University Publishing in 2025.

Ken Orchard

Ken Orchard was born in Keith, S.A. in 1959, and has worked as a Registration Officer at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide since 2007. Initially training as a visual artist in Adelaide and Sydney, he has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally since the 1980s. Over the past three decades he has also sustained a deep interest in the history of Australian colonial photography, publishing extensively on the work of German-born Australian photographer, J. W. Lindt.

Ian MacWilliams

Ian MacWilliams is the producer of the a Mildura based history project Frames of History, where film and video tape from Sunraysia’s past is being collected, restored and published. With more than 50 years media experience, Ian commenced his career at Mildura’s STV8 before moving to Melbourne and has since gained a broad understanding of all facets of television and sound production.
